As defined by the American Cancer Society, talcum powder is “made from talc, a mineral made up mainly of the elements magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. As a powder, it absorbs moisture well and helps cut down on friction, making it useful for keeping skin dry and helping to prevent rashes.”

Talcum powder has been used for years — by parents for their baby’s skin to women using the powder in the genital area. Johnson & Johnson once marketed their talcum powder with the slogan, “A sprinkle a day keeps the odor away” and many women have used talcum powder in their daily feminine hygiene routines.

For decades, numerous studies have found a connection between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, raising the question of whether these products are as safe as they are advertised.

A link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer was discovered back in 1971 and since then, many additional studies have been done, also supporting the discovery of the link between the powder and cancer.

Still, a clear and concise relationship between ovarian cancer and talcum powder has not been found. One theory is that the talc particles make their way to the ovaries where they cause inflammation. That inflammation can eventually lead to the formation of cancerous tumors.

The discovery of the link back in 1971 was by four OB/GYNs. They found talc particles in more than 75 percent of the ovarian tumors they investigated.

Even though more research is required to discover the exact relationship between the two, talcum powder lawsuits, specifically against Johnson & Johnson, have been prominent since 2014. Johnson & Johnson continued telling its consumers their products were safe for use regardless of the studies showing the opposite. As it turns out, evidence came about that Johnson & Johnson knew about the studies and their findings but did nothing to inform consumers.
